Lea Kaftan and Stefan Stojkovic presented updates on their research based on DANGER data at the PEDD Conference in Münster in late February. Stefan Stojkovic showed how polarization between ethnic minority and majority groups in interwar Yugoslavia first increased the turnout of the minority group in elections, but ultimately resulted in the breakdown of the Yugoslavian democracy in 1929. Lea Kaftan presented joint work with Nils-Christian Bormann on the relationship between fragmentation and polarization; they find that the effect of polarization is neither linear nor unconditional, and strongly depends on the level of fragmentation. The DANGER team highly appreciates the feedback by discussants and conference participants.
